SSG/APAIT opens Sunset West interim supportive housing in Hollywood

SSG/APAIT leadership, board members and DMH leaders cut ribbon to open Sunset West

Last night, we opened the doors to Sunset West.

In partnership with Brilliant Corners and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health,  Special Service for Groups (SSG) and its APAIT division (Access to Prevention, Advocacy, Intervention and Treatment), Sunset West expands the County’s commitment to connecting mental health care with safe, supportive housing.

Community leaders, mental health professionals, service providers, advocates, and neighbors gathered to see the 56 private, fully furnished units and the services that will support the people who call Sunset West home.

The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health recognizes stable housing as an important part of mental health and recovery—connecting people not only to a place to live, but to the clinical care and ongoing support that can help create long-term stability.

Sunset West puts that commitment into action.

“For 75 years, SSG has worked from a simple belief: people do better when the care they need meets them where they are. Sunset West is that belief made real,” stated Dr. Herb Hatanaka, Executive Director, Special Service for Groups. "It gives 56 people a safe place to live with the clinical care, case management, and daily support they need. We’re proud to stand with the Department of Mental Health and Brilliant Corners in proving that when housing and mental health care are delivered together, stability follows.”

Residents will have access to case management, mental health and recovery services, employment assistance, life-skills development, transportation assistance, 24/7 security and residential aide assistance, and other resources designed to help people move from crisis toward stability and greater independence.

“Every person who walks through these doors has a story. Sunset West offers a safe community, a private room, a key of their own, and a team that will be there day after day. Our job is to make sure every resident feels seen, supported, and respected as they move from crisis toward the life they want. That work starts now,” said Jury Candelario, Division Director, APAIT.

Thank you to the community leaders, partners, and neighbors who joined us—and to everyone whose work made Sunset West possible.

56 rooms. 56 opportunities for stability. One more important investment in the mental health and well-being of Los Angeles County.
